The Forgotten Man

Written by Charlie Hudson

Short Log Line

The main story of our film is that there is a man, James Ford, who is ex-milaty. He was presumed dead after a secrete mission went wrong and he came out with a lost memory as to who he is. he now lives day by day not knowing what happened to him until one day an opportunity rises for him to get the information he needs. by by doing what he has been asked small fragments of memory come back and he then remembers all.

Introduction of Key Characters:

James Ford: Main male actor, Ex government agent who loses his memory. Confident and decisive.
Women: Female actress. Right hand of the Boss. Can be very persuasive and manipulative.

Boss: Crime boss, who wants James to do a job. Ruthless and Controlling.

Government Agent x3: 3 male roles that are government agents that where in James' squad before he went missing. calm and decisive.

Henchman x3: 3 males, work for the crime boss. Violent and does what they are told.

Target Audience:

Our film is mainly aimed at an 18 plus audience. We have decided this audience as it has action scenes and language that would not be suitable for ages under 18. However it has a film noir aspect to it which would also attract the older audience to our film.

Act 1:

The first scene starts with James Ford held at gun point in an alley. the man holding him at gun point is on of the henchman that work for the boss. in this scene there is a small amount of dialogue with a voice over to explain the narrative of what is happening. He is being held at gun point because he has not been doing what the boss wants him to do and the henchman is there to put him in his place. However this scene is a flashback so it does not reveal to much as it leaves the audience wondering what happens.

Act 2:

This act consists of James Ford being approached by a women ( who works for the boss). She is convincing him to do the job that they have for him and in return they will reveal his past to him. Form there we see him get given the information that he must deliver and watch him make the transition from being a man who has nothing to lose to a man who could have everything to lose. The last we see in this act is James setting off to go and deliver the information.

Act 3:

This act then starts with him on the train when he notices men in suits have been following him (later on in the act we discover that they are the government agents). James Ford then runs from the train in an attempt to lose his followers. Due to this he runs into the alley we see at the start and act 1 repeats. after seeing act 1 again the government agents then reveal themselves along with the other 2 henchman. It is then a standoff with the agents on one side and the henchman on the other with James Ford stuck in the middle, Having to decide who to listen to. He must make a decision of losing his chances of finding out his past and go with the agents, or go with the henchman where he will be turning his back on the past in order to find it. a decision he doesn't take lightly.

Modern Day Film Noir

These are some Film Noir posters. 3 of the posters are classic film noir but one of them, "Gangster Squad", is a modern take of film noir. This is a similar thing that we are looking at for out film. they have taken film noir aspects and put them with modern day filming to create this look. This is the look we are going to try and achieve with our film with the font and costume like "Gangster Squad" have done.

Film Noir

Film Noir.

For our film we are going to be making in the style of film noir. this, we felt, would give our film more of an edge and make it less conventional. However we are not going to be doing film noir as it was, we will be doing a modern film noir which allows us to do what we planed to do with our film and still give us the edge. We will do this by adding filters to darken the video that we record and also make it so that the clothes and the fonts of the characters ect are all in the style of film noir.

new teaser poster

this is the teaser poster but with the new name to our film. (poster made by Charlie Blackmore)

Name Change

Changing the name.

Our original name for our trailer was the job. But after careful consideration we decided to change the name to best fit our film and make it sound more interesting.

These are some of the names we went through:

From the video you can see what name we went with The Forgotten Man

Final Title

This is our final film title. This is the finished product with the edit and effects that we will use in the file edit for our film trailer.

title research

Choosing the right title style is key in a trailer as its like you are giving the audience a message that tells them what the film is about and what they can expect from the film. Because this is an important thing we had to look into some possible title styles and effects that we could use.

poster

(Poster designed by Charlie Hudson, Alex Rosling and Charlie Blackmore. Made by Charlie Blackmore)

This is a mock up of a possible poster for our film "The Job". This poster wouldn't be a main poster as it does not give out a lot of information about the film. It would be a teaser poster to promote the film as it gives the name, one shot of an actor in a scene and says "in cinemas soon" but does not give anything to specific.

Music and Sound

Music and Sound.

We have managed to get a band and musician to provide us with music for our trailer. This is good for us as it is all his own work or covers that have been changed which means we will not encounter any legal issues when putting them in our trailer.

Also, we will be using garage band to make some of the music our selves. this enables us to adapt the music to the edit once it is all done and means we can sync the two together. this helps make it all fit and flow naturally rather than sounding and looking like its all be thrown together.

introduction to characters

This post explains who the characters in our film are and what there role is in the film.

James Ford:

This is the main character of our film. He is ex government who was lost in the field as he suffered an injury that made him lose his memory. Because of this, he lives on the streets of London not knowing who he is and what happened to him.

Boss:

This is the crime boss that wants James Ford to deliver secrete government files to another crime boss. He is a wealthy man who sees himself above the law and try's to take down the government. But he doesn't like to get his hands dirty, so he gets others to do his dirty work and in this case it is ex government James Ford.

Women:

This is the boss's right hand women, she is the one who is told to go and get James Ford and make him do the job they have for him. She is a ruthless character who considers herself to be safe because of her position in the organization yet she has a rebellious side and has the tendency to get emotionally involved with the people that are brought in.

Henchman x3:

These are the people that work for the big boss, they are basically the run rounds and whatever the boss says they do. In the film they are the ones who follow James Ford and make sure he is on track to do what he has been told. It is their job to make sure he doesn't step out of line, and if he does, deal with it.

Government Agents:

These are Jams Ford's team members from when he worked for the government. they are the ones who are trying to intercept the file so that it doesn't fall into the wrong hands. They realize who James Ford is and try to make him remember and give up the file but if they cant they have to make the harsh decision of what to do with him as they have been told to get the film by any means necessary.

1st draft of story board

This is our 1st idea for our film. the pictures show a rough outline as to what we want the main story of our film to be. However this will be edited if needed to produce a more stronger story line.

character costume

Main Character :
Start of trailer seen as a poor person: (Tramp) - ( Teared clothes, dirty and not much with him. )
These images show the in depth part of what the character will look like in his costume in the beginning of the trailer.
The meaning of tramp for the trailer is necessary as we need to show how he lives and where he has come from and what he has. This will be shown in the trailer by showing him as a tramp

The transformation of him coming from nothing to having this opportunity would ideally look something like what you see in limitless where he goes from a man with nothing to a successful businessman.

props

Props

This prop will be needed in our film as it will contain the important documents that the main character is asked to transport and deliver to someone. This picture represents the holder of the file, it will not necessarily look the same as the one shown.

This picture shows a gun, this is because we want the bad guys to have some type of weapon. Ideally this would be a gun as they are gangsters and it would help keep up the idea and also hep the mise-en-scene

We have a phone on our props as it will be a main focus in some of our shots that we do. This is because the main character is given a phone by the bad guys so that they can get in touch with him and monitor what he does.

plot

Our films main plot is that the main character has a military background but due to an accident on one of his tasks he lost his memory and cannot remember who he is and because he was on a secret task the government has lost track of him and thinks he is dead.

When the gang finds out about his background and they use him to there advantage to deliver a file that holds important information about all of the secret government agents that, in the wrong hands, can bring down the government. They persuade him to do this job in exchange for the information about his past.

As he transports the file he is being followed and then chased by men in suits, who turn out to be the government. Because he cannot remember he thinks that they are the bad guys trying to kill him and steal the file and that he is working for the good guys.

He then recognizes the symbol that the gang uses to identify themselves and has a flash back of his accident. this is where he finds out that the people he is working for are the same people he was trying to bring down when he was working for the government and that the file he now has is the same file that he was trying in intercept. Once he realizes this, he then try to take down the gang who he is working for now whilst trying to avoid getting killed by the government who still think that he is one of the bad guys.

His big task now is to prove to the government that he is working for them again whilst trying to keep the allusion that he is still working for the bad guys in order to take them down from the inside.

This is a basic plot that outlines the whole underlining story for the film that we are making our trailer about. This is so that we know the outline of our story so that when we come to making the trailer we know the different aspects that we need to include and the type of story that we need to get across in our trailer.

feedback

When we presented our idea for the film and what we have for our film we was given feedback as to some issues people had with our idea.
The main issue that was raised was that the layout of our film gives to much away about the story. Originally we was going to show our main character wealthy and safe and then go back in time to how he got there. The point was raised that f we did it like this then it would not matter what happened in the film as you have been told he is fine and he is going to make it through with the money and with his life. This was a big point to consider so we took that section out and now we are thinking of ways to start the film without giving to much away but still having the flash back as we as  group liked the idea of having different tenses in our film.

we was also giving advise on our location as we was not specific enough as we just said in london and for our pitch we was told that we needed specific places and locations and reasons for those locations. therefor we went away and came up with a couple of places where we would like to film and why.

Moodboard

This is my mood board for the original ideas for the story of our film trailer. from this mood board you can see that the film idea that we have is an action drama type idea. this however is only a base for our idea, from this mood board we will develop our idea to make it more structural and meaningful.

Wednesday 11 September 2013

location

For our location we wanted places that reflect what we are trying to say about the character but still keeping with the idea of the film. above are some pictures of the sort of place that we would like to film because they fit the story and the atmosphere we are trying to put across in some scenes but also they are allow us to show a part of the character through them. for example, the garages will most likely be a scene where he is alone and is approached by the people who want him to do the job. This location can reflect on how he has nothing in his life but with the people approaching him it offers him a way out.

Difference between teaser and main trailer

This is a teaser trailer for the disney film called frozen. It is 1:27 in length which is very short for a trailer but not for a teaser trailer. Teaser trailer's are generally shorter in length as it does not have as much information as a normal trailer does. A teaser trailer, as you see in this video, does not explain the story or plot of a film, nor does it give you an overlook of the scenes in the film. It is very minimalist and shows you a couple of main characters and a couple of locations, in this case one, and it has some dialog that has been taken from another scene or the scene that you are watching.

This is a normal trailer for the film 300:Rise of an Empire. This has many differences from the teaser trailer. For example, this does have dialog but it does not have as much as it mainly focuses on the sound that is in the trailer. Also, the trailer is longer as it is 2:31 which means that there is much more information about the film in the trailer. It shows much more scenes and locations than the teaser trailer.

The reason why we have the two trailers are simple. One is to give you a brief look at the film so that you are interested in finding out more about the film where as the other one tells you allot more about the film, who is in it and what you can expect from the film.

Trailers

The trailer for Pacific Rim is a good trailer for a film as it has all the things you would expect a trailer to have. for example, the trailer has all the important information through out the trailer such as the companies involved of the movie, who the director was and when the film comes out in cinema. Also the trailer is conventional as it has a voice over which gives you information about what is happening in the film yet does not give to much away (in this case it is mixed with a voice over and a speech in the film to create an atmosphere so you are more encouraged to go and see the film). The trailer also has a lot of different clips that gives you a taste of what the film will be like and also helps you to understand what the voice over is saying as the clips generally matches with what is being said.

The sound in the trailer is good as well as it has been selected to fit the clips so that it has all be timed to fit together. this is good as it helps the audience engage with the trailer and helps draw them in.

this trailer for insidious 2 is good as it fits all the conventions for a normal film trailer. it gives you clear information as to what the film is about and give you some of the plot so that you know what you are going to see. also it shows you all the main characters in the film and what role they play in the film. these are the people who talk in the trailer rather than having a voice over in the trailer as it makes it more linkable to the film knowing that the words are coming straight from the different film clips.
the edit in the trailer is mostly fade in and fade out as it adds suspense to the trailer (this helps it relate to the genre of a horror). also because its a horror it has fast cuts from one scene to another at times to also make it feel like a horror, this when added with the sound is mainly to make you jump and be surprised so that the trailer seems more scary. the sound in the trailer also helps hake if seem like a horror because most of the music is sinister and the dialogue in the trailer is mainly of the people sounded scared and worried about something.
